Arts Volunteering embraces a whole variety of Arts Society work in the community aimed at giving access to the Arts for everyone. The City of Chichester society aims to offer engaging projects in a wide range of the arts to groups of all ages mainly in our local area. Examples of recent contributions have been in the sponsorship of arts projects with local schools, workshops at Graylingwell Chapel and  Children’s Bookfest - Chichester.  We have made small donations to a variety of mainly locally based charities and projects to support access to the arts for as many as possible. See below for more details of our projects.

Current and On-going Projects

St Wilfrid’s Hospice, Chichester

The society has provided funds to support art activities and art therapy at the hospice for patients and their families.

West Sussex Music - Little Big Sing and Big Sing

The society funded two singing workshop afternoons at local primary schools, lead and provided by West Sussex Music.

A “Little Big Sing” was held at Bosham Primary School and they were joined by KS 1 pupils from Chidham and Funtington Primary Schools. Please click here to read Rachel’s report about the afternoon.

The second singing afternoon, a “Big Sing” was held at East Wittering Primary School and the school was very appreciative of our support and a report of the afternoon can be viewed here.

Jessie Younghusband Primary School

Jessie Younghusband Primary School has moved to a new site at Minerva Heights. Artwork created by the pupils is going on display at the new site using different media to represent Chichester and the history of the school. The society was very pleased to provide funding for this. Click here to see some of the displays.

Combined Project

For our combined project for 2026, we will again be supporting an exhibition at the Oxmarket Gallery in Chichester where three local charities will be exhibiting – Stonepillow, Apuldram and the Aldingbourne Trust. All three charities use art as part of their work. 

Our combined project for 2024 was a new collaboration with the Oxmarket Gallery and the University of Chichester. With additional funding from The Arts Society, the final year fine arts students held an exhibition of their degree work from June 25th to July 7th at the gallery during the Festival of Chichester. The University and the students involved were very appreciative of the opportunity the exhibition afforded them at the end of their degree course.  Click here to see some images from the very successful exhibition.

With funding from The Arts Society, the three societies were again able to fund the final year fine arts students’ exhibition at the Oxmarket Gallery in July 2025. Click here to see some images from a very successful exhibition.

Graylingwell Chapel

At Graylingwell Chapel we have been pleased to sponsor materials for Art for Wellbeing Workshops for both adults and young people.  We continue to give support for these workshops, including funding for Primary School children’s holiday activities.

Koestler Arts

The Koestler Arts encourage people in the criminal justice system to change their lives by participating in the arts. They share their artworks with the public, so people can witness this diverse range of voices, stories and talent.

Children’s Bookfest – Chichester

The Children’s BookFest in Chichester is unique in it’s aim to include all children.  Through bringing authors, poets and illustrators into local schools they provide an experience where they can share their passion for reading and books. Each child will meet and hear an author and receive a dedicated and signed book. For some children it might be the first book they own.

Bishop Luffa School

Our ongoing support of the art department at Bishop Luffa School continues and our funding enabled the purchase of an A1 colour printer for the academic year 2024/25. The response by staff and students to this has been fantastic. It has enabled the students to showcase their work on a larger scale and increase the impact of their work through photography. As always, the quality and variety of work produced by the GCSE and ‘A ‘level students is amazing. See examples of the student’s work in the gallery.

During the academic year 2023/24 the society provided funding to support the purchase of textiles equipment to be used in the art curriculum. See some examples of the students’ work here.

During the academic year 2025/26 the society has funded the purchased of three digital cameras to support the GCSE students with their work.

During recent years we have supported a variety of projects including:

Jessie Younghusband Primary School

We are pleased to be able to support a local primary school by providing funding to support their end of year, whole school production of Aladdin in July. Our support has enabled the school to purchase a variety of equipment and materials to enhance the children’s production including a stage backdrop frame and backdrops and microphones. All of these will then be available for future use. The production was a great success and our support was greatly appreciated by the whole school community. The society supported the school again in 2024 by funding the materials to enable all the KS 2 pupils to develop their sketchbook skills. Please click here to see examples of some of the year 6 pupils' work.

Outside In

The charity Outside In is a catalyst for change. Founded in 2006, it is now an established national charity that aims to provide a platform for artists who face significant barriers to the art world due to health, disability, social circumstance or isolation. The society has donated funding to provide artist support days where artists can get one to one support to learn new skills and create their own online galleries.

Combined Projects

Combined projects with TAS Chichester and TAS Lavant Valley, initially with CASS Sculpture Foundation and with West Sussex Music

Pallant House Gallery

A combined project working with Pallant House Gallery to increase access to the experience of the gallery through creating sensory bags. These contain items to enrich the 'gallery experience' for a visitor who may for example have a sensory processing disorder, a communication need or learning disability. Ultimately the bag is for anyone who feels that it would help them access and interpret the Gallery.  Please click here to see a photo of the bags.

Bishop Luffa School

Bishop Luffa School Arts department projects have included Art Starter Kits for the Year 12 Art A level and Year 10 GCSE students in academic year 2019/20 and in academic year 2022/23.

- Bishop Luffa Year 9 Printing Project – to see a fabulous presentation of the work the year 9 pupils completed in 2019 click here. The final prints are stunning.

- Bishop Luffa Year 9 Masks Project - the society sponsored a project at the school during the spring term 2018 entitled ‘Fantastical Masks’. It was a mask making project for all year 9 pupils.  Click here for a presentation showing some of the fantastic work done by the students.

- Bishop Luffa – Tapestry and Weaving project – it linked into the “Containers and Containment” scheme of work at the beginning of the students A level art course during the academic year 2020/21. The results of the students’ work can be viewed here

- Bishop Luffa - During the academic year 2021/22 we funded the purchase of two sewing machines so that students can respond using textile techniques and processes. An example of how stitch has been used by a student can be seen here and in the gallery.

During the academic year 2023/24 the society provided funding to support the purchase of textiles equipment to be used in the art curriculum. See some examples of the students’ work here.

- The Royal Society of British Artists  - Work submitted by Bishop Luffa School to the RBA can be seen in the gallery.

Other Projects

Think18 is a local charity that supports young adults with learning difficulties. During 2022 we sponsored art materials for various activities including T-shirts for tie day at their summer camp. www.think18.org.uk

East Wittering, Bosham, Jessie Younghusband, Boxgrove, Parklands, West Wittering, Chidham, Birdham, Funtington and Fishbourne Primary Schools have all been supported by the society.
